God continues to bless
our academy and our AR program. Thanks to
Mr. Griffey’s diligence, we have a
subscription to Renaissance Place.
What does this mean for students, parents
and staff? Well, here is the exciting part;
instead of only having access to the few
hundred quizzes we have purchased in the
past, or a few more we possibly would
purchase, we now have access to over 100,000
AR quizzes.
Each student has his/her own user name and
password and quizzes can be taken either in
the computer lab or the classroom. Quizzes
cannot be taken outside of school. But
students and parents can access the database
of quizzes anywhere they have access to the
internet.
Here is how it works:
(Note – this is only one of several methods
of getting there!)
1 - When you are online, type www.renlearn.com in the address bar
and click “GO”. This will take you
to their home page.
2 - On the left hand side of the screen you will see “Quick Find” and
under that “Order Quizzes”. Click
on “Order Quizzes.
(Note – The first time you do this a screen appears that asks you
to fill in a country; click U.S.
This screen won’t appear the next time you
log on.)
From here you will be on a “quiz search”
page where you can type in the title of the
book or search by the author if you wish.
If you would like to search by BOOK LEVEL
you need to click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
It is located to the right of the title
box on the quiz search page. On the
advanced search page you will fill in the
book level range (which should be your
child’s ZPD range). Your child’s teacher
will be sending that information home within
the next couple of weeks. Then you need to
fill in the INTEREST LEVEL. That
will either be Lower Grades
for 1st - 3rd or
Middle Grades for 4 – 6 and click
GO. A list of literally
thousands of books will appear that you can
print for your convenience or check online
whenever you wish. Don’t worry about the
“purchase quiz” part. You will NOT be
purchasing quizzes just by searching through
the database.
One thing I will caution students about
is to check the author and
publisher of your book and match them to
the ones listed for your quiz. Many
versions of the same title are available and
if you read the condensed (abridged) version
of Little Women but take the
quiz for the unabridged version, you will
not be able to pass the quiz. Or if the
book you have is not published by one of the
publishers listed there is a possibility
that the questions will not match the book
you read.
Another aspect of this subscription is
allowing parents more of an active role in
your student’s book selections. With
thousands of books to choose from, your
child may choose books from outside our
library. As long as there is an Accelerated
Reader quiz available and the book is within
your child’s interest level and ZPD range
he/she may take a quiz on it. You may feel
that some of these are not appropriate for
your child, and they may not be. You will
need to help your child make his/her
selections. Some of you already do this,
for others this may be new. Parents
need to approve their children’s books,
especially ones selected outside our academy
library. Teachers will still approve
many book selections, especially for book
reports and students will be guided in their
library searches as well.
I know this probably seems like a lot of
information to take in at one time, but the
classroom teachers and I are going over this
information repeatedly with the students and
we are all learning together. Please feel
